John Kaminar is a soldier, educator, and public servant. He served for 30 years in the United States Army and Army Reserve. An infantry officer, he is paratroop and Ranger qualified, has served with the international peacekeeping mission on the Egyptian-Israeli border, and has seen combat in the Persian Gulf War and the War in Afghanistan. He has been decorated with the Legion of Merit, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Combat Infantryman Badge. He retired from the service with the rank of colonel. John has pursued a second career in education; he has taught foreign languages, English composition, and research methods and has been a high school and middle school administrator. He joined the staff of the Arkansas Department of Education in 2012 as a curriculum specialist. He currently serves as the Department's military families engagement advisor. He holds a bachelor's degree in foreign languages from Texas A. and M. University and a master of education degree from the University of Arkansas at Little Rock. He is a graduate of the Army's Combined Arms and Services Staff School and Command and General Staff College and the Air Force's Air Command and Staff College. He has an Arkansas teaching license for German and Russian, is certified by the American Red Cross to teach first aid CPR, and use of an AED, but the Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid response Training Center to instruct Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events, and by FEMA to teach Community Emergency Response Team courses.
