Heidi’s Kids is a local community service organization serving children and families through community outreach efforts and partnerships with local schools in the Greater Birmingham, AL area. Officially a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization, Heidi’s Kids began in 2007 as a way for a small group of youth to serve others. Friends of founder Heidi Marimberga’s daughters served as the first volunteers in this organization that has served countless members of the local community. Today, Heidi’s Kids consists of around forty active volunteers and about sixty part-time volunteers to help conduct the mission of Heidi’s Kids, which is to “Support and facilitate community involvement to ease the burden of those in need.” The key focus of Heidi’s Kids is to provide help and care, in unique ways, specifically to children, in our community, and the major obstacle for our organization is a lack of funds to help support our community outreach.Heidi’s Kids has served the community in a variety of special projects throughout the years. Major projects have included: blessing boxes, which are outdoor, drive-up food pantry boxes stocked daily for anyone to receive food, coat drives for the homeless, partnering with local police and fire departments to provide comfort toys for children in stressful situations involving first responders, an annual toy program providing Christmas presents to local families, and by sponsoring emotional support resource rooms in local Title I schools, which consistent of a student body comprising of 85% or greater of students at or below poverty level.Heidi’s Kids may still be considered a small non-profit compared to other service providers in the community, but the results of their work uniquely serve children and families in a manner which is currently unmet. The volunteers, educators, the parents, and most importantly, the children all recognize the impactful service and support provided by Heidi’s Kids. As we all recognize, no act of kindness, no matter how small, is ever wasted. In these small, daily acts of service, Heidi’s Kids is making a large, measurable difference in our community to improve the future for all.
