Russ Miller - saxophonist, flutist, composer, arranger and educator – has been musically active in the metropolitan Detroit area for more than forty years. He has recently retired as Associate Professor in the Department of Music at Wayne State University where he served as Department Chair, Associate Chair, taught jazz arranging and orchestration, jazz improvisation, applied lessons, and directed the Jazz Big Band.Russ’ performance credits include the likes of J.C. Heard, Dizzy Gillespie, Joe Williams, Buddy De Franco, Rob McConnell, Rosemary Clooney, and Sammy Davis Jr. In addition, he has performed with many top national entertainers. He has performed with his own group at the Detroit International Jazz Festival, the Michigan Jazz Festival and at many local and regional venues. He has performed with and written arrangements for the Detroit Jazz Festival Big Band, the Toledo Jazz Orchestra and the Lansing Jazz Orchestra. Russ’ arrangements and playing can be heard on the recordings Dennis Tini/Russ Miller Jazz Quartet with Strings and Ron Kischuk and the Masters of Music Big Band: Smile.Russ has produced five recordings under his own name including: Two for the Road with vocalist Jeannine Miller; Suite Justice: A Jazz Setting of the Beatitudes for Jazz Big Band and Chorus; The Dance Eternal – The Dance of Life; Russ Miller and the Jazz Orchestra – You and the Night and the Music; and Russ Miller and the Jazz Orchestra Present the Music of Matt Michaels.
