With nearly 1,300 Obstetricians and Gynecologists in the State of Colorado, the Colorado Section of ACOG organizes educational events aimed at addressing current issues that face our health care providers, the women and families they care for, and we seek to reduce morbidity and mortality through quality improvement strategies and initiatives. We currently host four events per year:The year kicks off with the"Stuart A. Gottesfeld MD Series."Previous topics have included Primary Ovarian Insufficiency, Hot Flashes - The Case for NK3 Receptor Antagonists, Care of the Geriatric "Bump" (pregnancy after 40), An Update on the Legal Landscape for Pregnancy Care, and A.I. in OB/GYN. The program is named after Dr. Stuart Gottesfeld, who had a successful private practice in Denver for nearly four decades that eventually included his two younger brothers, and his oldest son. After retiring from clinical practice, he continued to contribute to the field of OB/GYN. He was known as an excellent surgeon and teacher, and lived out his passion by teaching the OB/GYN residents at the University of Colorado several mornings a week, and was a strong advocate for women's health. Dr. Gottesfeld passed away in June 2020.Our Legislative Committee and lobbyist organizes"A Day at the Capital"where we spend time speaking and collaborating with state legislators on issues affecting women's health and reproductive rights. While this is an organized, one-day event, our lobbyist works closely with our state legislators and other organizations throughout the legislative session to address issues in women's healthcare. In addition, our lobbyist keeps the Executive Committee apprised of any new possible legislation that may be coming up in the Legislature that may require our action. In the spring, we hold a half-day event of case-presentations onGyn Conundrums. Unique and complex cases are presented describing the nature of the case, the treatment strategies, the outcomes, and any strategies for improvement that may be implemented for addressing similar scenarios in the future. This may include the development of clinical guidelines used locally and that may be advanced to the national level.Thesummer/fall conferencehas traditionally been designed to address issues in various aspects of women's healthcare. Previous topics have included physician wellness, doctors and addiction, headaches and women, ADHD and the use of psychostimulants, breast cancer risk, screening and prevention strategies, diabetes in pregnancy, obesity and the use of anti-obesity medications, the risks and complications associated with surgery in the obese patient, thrombophilia and anticoagulation in pregnancy, ultrasound strategies during pregnancy and the role in an era of cell-free DNA, breastfeeding pearls, why cardiology matters during pregnancy, sepsis in the pregnant patient, and an update on current IVF technologies.TheHarvey M. Cohen MD Maternal Morbidity and Mortality Summitwas started in 2013 under the tutelage of Dr. Harvey Cohen. The purpose of the Summit is"to meet annually and collaborate on cases involving maternal morbidity and mortality in order to identify systems issues and create awareness and changes that will improve the health and safety of mothers in Colorado."Dr. Cohen is an obstetrician-gynecologist who specialized in women's health, particularly the female reproductive system, pregnancy, and childbirth. Prior to retiring from clinical practice, he has been a long-time advocate for women's healthcare including their reproductive rights. The mission statement for the Summit speaks loudly to Dr. Cohen's passion to improving systems issues aimed at reducing the incidence of maternal morbidity and mortality. If you would like more information about attending these events or becoming involved with the Colorado Section, please contact the Section Administrator at colo.acog.2023@gmail.com.
