The association was established in 2014 to act as an organisational entity following the success of the inaugural Blacksmiths Festival in 2013. The WBMAA is managed by a volunteer committee which meets on a regular basis in the lead up to the festival which is held bi-annually.The Blacksmiths Festival is held in front of the Waterside Metal Art Studio on a secluded section of the Footscray riverside and is a free public event that allows people to experience blacksmiths in action, building large sculptures and holding demonstrations, along with stalls selling unique blacksmithing and metal working equipment and art works. The festival also offers the public the ability to try their hand blacksmithing at short ‘taster sessions’, with no experience necessary. The festival will include demonstrations from local and international blacksmiths, as well as host talks by experienced blacksmiths on the relevance of blacksmithing as a contemporary artistic practice. It will also showcase live music and dancing, as well as provide attendees with catering from food trucks and a festival bar.
