The City of Oglethorpe, named after the founder of Georgia, James Oglethorpe, was incorporated in 1849, and in 1854 Oglethorpe was established as the county seat for Macon County, which is located in Southwest-Central Georgia. Oglethorpe has a current population of around 1,400 but at one point, Oglethorpe was one of the largest cities in Georgia with a population of around 20,000. Oglethorpe was called "the metropolis of the Southeast" and was on the short list of cities being considered as the new capital of Georgia, but missed the final candidates by one vote. By the 1850s a smallpox and malaria epidemic tragically wiped out most of the city's population.Oglethorpe is a large agricultural community with farmers growing row crops, peaches, pecans, vegetables, and other foods, as well as dairy farming. We are an industry friendly city with a close proximity to Interstate 75 and other major state routes. The Norfolk Southern and CSX Railroad companies, and nearby Macon County Airport are also an asset. Our history is rich and colorful and the many historical treasures and the beautiful scenery make Oglethorpe a wonderful place to visit or call home. We welcome you and look forward to meeting you soon!
