Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc., the first intercollegiate Greek letter fraternity established for African American students, was organized at Cornell University, Ithaca, New York, on December 4, 1906. The year after the founding, Beta Chapter was founded at Howard University in 1907.During the fall of 1925, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, a group of prominent African American Professional men, met at the home of Dr. Edel L. McIntosh, Sr., who was a graduate of Fisk University and Meharry Medical College. They were interested in establishing an graduate chapter in Chattanooga.
