In 1978, a simple act of generosity sparked a movement. Legend has it that Bessie Green, a member of the North Reformed Church in Newark, donated her fur coat to fund food and coats for the homeless. Whether fact or folklore, her vision inspired the creation of Bessie Green Community, Inc.Since becoming a 501(c)(3) charity in 1978, we’ve been committed to serving Newark through clothing barns, soup kitchens, and food pantries. Today, we combat food deserts and barriers to access caused by economic and logistical challenges, worsened by the pandemic.Our mission is simple: “Feed, clothe, and support our neighbors with compassion and dignity.” In 2024, we provided essential services, including over 44,000 meals, 35,000 pantry bags, and access to clothing, while working toward our mission of fostering self-reliance and resilience in the communities we serve.
