Fashion for Cancer was founded by Ong Bee Yan (Yan), aged 69 years old, a senior fashion model. It is a charity fashion show modelled by cancer survivors and an initiative aiming to raise funds for cancer research and financial aid. The inaugural event of Fashion for Cancer, held on August 25, 2023, featured cancer survivors as models marked a departure from traditional runway presentations. The success of this initiative was made possible by six months of meticulous planning and the unwavering support of a community that shared the same passion for the cause.Yan's connection to the fight against cancer is deeply personal. The devastating impact of cancer extended to her uncle, aunt, another cousin, and eventually, her own mother. However, amidst the losses, there was a glimmer of hope as her sister-in-law, a cancer survivor, triumphed over the disease. Life threw a cruel curveball when her only son, Rong Liang, was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer on August 17, 2021. Rong Liang, a fit and healthy individual, faced a challenging battle. Tragically, on September 18, 2023, he succumbed to the disease at the age of 38 after he walked the stage with other cancer survivors for Fashion for Cancer.The journey of facing cancer involves a myriad of emotions and physical challenges and Yan pondered the idea of bringing joy to her son's life, even if just for a day, amidst the struggles of battling cancer. The inspiration struck when Rong confidently strolled through the streets of Kyoto like a supermodel during their holiday. This realization led to the vision of not just hosting a fashion show with runway models but one that prominently featured cancer survivors. It is an opportunity for these survivors to showcase their resilience, courage, and strength on stage. The staggering costs of Rong's chemotherapy and clinic visits left her contemplating how families with limited financial means could afford such treatments. Beyond highlighting the journeys of cancer survivors and empowering them onstage, the primary goal of Fashion For Cancer is to raise funds for cancer research and financial aid. The inaugural event on August 25, 2023, successfully raised nearly $140,000, all of which was donated to the NCCS (National Cancer Centre Singapore) Cancer Fund.Fashion for Cancer Charity Fashion Show event will continue to showcase cancer survivors as models and raise funds for cancer research and financial aid support with the generous support of sponsors, donors, volunteers and the community.
