Established in 2005 by naturalist Monique Pool and friends, the nonprofit Green Heritage Fund Suriname aims to promote sustainable development by educating and empowering society to consciously strive towards continued protection and improvement of the regional environment. GHFS’ mission is to provide Surinamese citizens with knowledge and skills to make wise decisions for sustainable use of natural resources. Prominent programs include the Xenarthra, Dolphin, Education and Research, and Green Community Development. GHFS programs and activities are concentrated in Suriname's coastal and marine areas. This makes the GHFS the only Surinamese environmental organization focused exclusively on the coastal and marine areas in Suriname. The dolphin program serves dual purposes: to protect the wild dolphin and manatee populations through a sound community monitoring program and to educate the public regarding ocean conservation. our conservation efforts in and around the Suriname River evolved further into efforts to promote marine spatial planning in Suriname for improved, sustainable, and fair management of coastal and marine resources.
