You're invited to explore the fascinating History of the Collection at the UK's only wind energy museum, located right here in Norfolk!Discover the captivating story of windmills and windpumps, brought to life through the lifelong passion of Ronald "Bob" Morse. His journey began at just seven years old, sparked by a simple gift that ignited a desire to preserve these iconic structures.Windmills have a rich history spanning centuries, with early designs appearing in 9th-century Persia for grinding grain and pumping water. The technology evolved significantly, leading to the widespread vertical-axis windmills seen across Europe by the 12th century – structures that became vital to the landscape and economy. In 1947, as many older windmills faced demolition, Morse stepped in to save the derelict white tower mill at Thurne, Norfolk. This act of preservation ensured Thurne Mill remains a celebrated and frequently photographed landmark today. His dedication also extended to windpumps, crucial for water management in rural areas. He meticulously gathered a unique collection of these machines from the 19th and early 20th centuries, sourced from the UK, America, and Australia. Many of these are the sole surviving examples of their kind, offering invaluable insight into wind-powered technology. Our museum is set on a peaceful 2.75-acre site amidst the beautiful Norfolk marshes and Broads. Visitors can delve into the history and mechanics of windmills and windpumps while enjoying the stunning scenery. We offer ample free parking, and our facilities are disabled-friendly, with ramps providing access to all indoor areas. You'll also find a disabled ECO toilet and tea rooms for your comfort.Be sure to join our guided tours for an in-depth look at the collection, offered daily at 11:30 AM and 2:30 PM.
