Family Physician Dr. Elizabeth George spearheaded the development of Healthy Eating Adventures in 2010 as part of MACWell. She leads program planning and creates the research based kick-off presentation and discussions, and reviews lab results and progress. Her “Ask the Doc” potluck evening answers medical questions from participants as they take hold of their own health. “I thrive on attending the HEA evenings and hearing about the amazing health results people are experiencing!”Dr. George is a founder of the Mercersburg Area Council for Wellness (MACWell), a non-profit organization that supports a community commitment to making the Mercersburg area a vibrant and healthy place to live. MACWell projects have included enhancing walkability bikeability in the area, building a stream side trail, and revitalizing the local waterway. Since its start in 2010, Healthy Eating Adventure has been offered several times a year around Franklin County. A vision of Healthy Eating Adventures is to spread to other counties and states – and now includes Healthy Eating Adventure Yuma, a Harrisburg Healthy Eating Adventure for seniors, and an Adventure for the US Army at Carlisle Barracks.The results of this highly successful community program have been presented at many physician continuing education conferences and at an international conference in LA – Healthy Lifestyle Expo. .Dr. Liz worked with Chambersburg Hospital dining services to implement the AMA and ACC recommendations to offer a plant based entrée at every meal. She also worked with the CHF and Cardiac Rehab Clinics to provide plant based lifestyle education to improve cardiac outcomes.Dr. Liz encourages fellow physicians to step out of regular practice and talk to their community about the importance of healthful eating and regular exercise.In March 2019, Dr. George received the Inaugural PA Academy of Family Physicians Community Service Award for her community wellness advocacy and projects.“Dr. Liz” and her husband set up family practice in Mercersburg in 1980. A main focus of their medical practice was preventing the common illnesses through a healthy lifestyle. In 1984 she spearheaded the elimination of smoking from Chambersburg Hospital. 1985 she was instrumental in establishing the Chambersburg Hospital Maternity Clinic, as a way to help new parents establish healthy family lifestyles even before their children were born, receiving a March of Dimes award for this effort. Dr. Liz made wellness education a key focus when participating in mission trips to Bolivia, Equator and the Amazon.
