The National Platform of Self-advocates is founded on the rights of people with intellectual disabilities to be included as equal citizens with rights as outlined in the UN Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. We are the nationally recognised spokes-organisation on policy and issues affecting the lives of people with intellectual disabilities. We aim to represent our members in local, regional, national, and EU policy-making groups. Our participation helps to make public decision-making more accessible. We contribute our expertise on what it means to live with an intellectual disability. We benefit people with intellectual disabilities by ensuring theirs is the only voice we represent. We do this by only having intellectually disabled leaders and members. We help members to become effective leaders and advocates. We connect local and regional self-advocacy groups and support their participation and decision-making in their communities across Ireland.
