Since its first performance in 2000,The Fitzhardinge Consorthas become one of the South West’s most distinctive vocal ensembles. Its mission is clear: to bring world-class, rarely performed choral music to new audiences, and to use that music to inspire, educate, and give back to the community.Known for imaginative interpretations of Renaissance and Baroque works, as well as powerful performances of music by living composers, the Consort has earned a strong reputation across the region. Critics and audiences alike praise its rich sound, bold programming, and artistic excellence. The choir is made up of professional singers from across the West of England and South Wales, many of whom perform with internationally renowned groups such asThe Sixteen,The Tallis Scholars, and the choirs of Westminster Abbey and St Paul’s Cathedral. Several also appear in leading operatic roles at venues including Covent Garden and Glyndebourne.Typically performing with 16 to 20 singers, the ensemble adapts to suit each concert and venue. It also champions emerging talent, offering university students the opportunity to sing as mentored members. Many alumni go on to train at top conservatoires and perform with ensembles such asEx Cathedra,The Monteverdi Choir, andThe Sixteen.Although based at Bristol Cathedral, the Consort performs just as comfortably in small village churches and rural communities. Its core belief is that exceptional music should be heard everywhere, not only in major cities or grand concert halls.Under the direction of Peter Wagstaff since 2014, the Consort took a step forward in 2020 with the addition of a governing board and administrative team, setting the stage for even greater reach and impact in the years ahead.
