About This Event

The NMT Fellowship is a peer review opportunity for MT-BC’s (or the professional equivalent) who have already completed the NMT basic training. The NMT Fellowship is required every five years in order to maintain your NMT-F Academy Affiliation. During the Fellowship, NMT therapists and educators present 3 videos of their clinical and/or academic work to their NMT peers in order to receive constructive feedback. The Transformational Design Model is used as an objective process to guide the discussion and discern whether participants demonstrate an appropriate selection of treatment based on the understanding of the diagnostics, functional assessment, and functional goals of the clients.

Participants are evaluated and will pass with a 70% majority vote.

Course Objectives:

Participants will demonstrate a basic definition and advanced knowledge about the implementation of neurologic music therapy (NMT), including the taxonomy of techniques used in NMT through verbal and video demonstration.

Participants will demonstrate an increased knowledge of current research supporting NMT techniques as evidenced by clinical choices based on current best practice.

Participants will demonstrate thru live video, a working knowledge of the Transformational Design Model; a model to assist in treatment selection based on functional goals.

Participants will actively demonstrate current clinical assessments for treatment evaluation.

Participants will answer basic neuroanatomy and pathology questions related to a variety of neurologic disorders.

What to Prepare :

CLINICIANS- Bring three (3) video examples of three (3) different NMT techniques you used with your clients and/or patients. These techniques need to be from at least two (2) of the three domains (e.g. sensorimotor and cognition). The recordings should be no more than one (1) year old. The presentation should be 5-10 minutes in length. Be prepared to provide the diagnoses and background of the client, as well the functional goal(s) you are working on. Remember: You are responsible for having the proper institutional and/or client releases.

EDUCATORS- Bring (3) video examples of you teaching three (3) different NMT techniques you taught to your students (e.g. that includes explanations, demonstrations, and student facilitation with instructor feedback).  Make sure you include how you use the TDM to guide your teaching.  These techniques need to be from at least two (2) of the three domains (e.g. sensorimotor and cognition). The recordings should be no more than one (1) year old.

RESEARCHERS- Presentations must include published data from at least one study of your own work that is either basic science or translational clinical research related to NMT. Presentations should be no more than 20 minutes in length leaving additional time for discussion.

EVALUATION- Evaluation will be completed by all participants. Participants will be informed within two weeks after the training whether they have passed, or whether they need to resubmit one or more of their clinical examples based on a 70% majority vote.

This International Training Program of the Academy is endorsed by the World Federation of Neurologic Rehabilitation (WFNR), by the European Federation of Neurorehabilitation Societies (EFNS), and the International Society for Clinical Neuromusicology (CNM). The International Neurologic Music Therapy Institute Fellowship is approved by the U.S. Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT) for 18 Specialty Continuing Music Therapy Education credits. The Robert F. Unkefer Academy for Neurologic Music Therapy, #P-105, maintains responsibility for program quality and adherence to CBMT policies and criteria.

Completion of this course does not ensure that the participant is currently a Board Certified Music Therapist (MT-BC). Verify music therapy board certification status at www.cbmt.org
