Our Founder | Ambriel PouncyHow can the fashion and textile sectors undergo a transformative shift to become forces for good, respecting the limits of our planet while empowering and uplifting marginalized communities?This question has been at the heart of my journey as the visionary behind the Fusion Fashion Tech Summit. With over a decade of experience as a fashion executive and creator, at the intersections of technology, culture, fashion, and entertainment, I am deeply committed to driving social and cultural change through Web3 innovations and blockchain technologies.Growing up in Anchorage, Alaska, I witnessed the devastating effects of climate change firsthand on one of the most beautiful places on Earth. The first time I learned of the environmental impact of climate racism was around four years old when my father explained to me that many of my uncles and aunts were stricken with cancer due to a small southeastern city's placement of a fossil fuel and petrochemical operations plant near his family's house, on the predominantly Black side of town. My father was raised in the south, in what is now considered an environmental "sacrifice zone" - an area disproportionately burdened by pollution and other environmental and health hazards.According to EPA data, this 57% Black city is ranked in the 90th to 95th percentile for cancer risk from breathing in air toxics. The reality struck even closer to home when my father, a retired Air Force Combat Veteran, passed away from cancer. My father would often remind me of this toxic proximity and its devastating impact on his own family, with many of his twelve siblings becoming terminally ill from various forms of cancer.This personal experience with the intersections of environmental degradation, racial inequity, and public health has been a driving force behind my work.. The Fusion Fashion Tech Summit is a community of believers, innovators, visionaries, experts and is built on the countless authentic stories of people seeking human-centric innovation at the convergence of technology, creativity, and circularity.It is disheartening to me that the $2.5 trillion global fashion industry that I love and have built a successful career in is a significant contributor to greenhouse gas emissions, racism, waste, and exploitative labor practices. Through the Fusion Fashion Tech Summit, I aim to encourage our community to leverage Web3-enabled technologies, such as blockchain, XR, and AI, to accelerate circularity, sustainability, and inclusion in these industries.I believe that by addressing the root causes of environmental and social inequities such as overproduction, overconsumption, FOMO, fast fashion, and social media-induced hauls in the fashion and textile industries, the industry can become a powerful force for good, creating jobs, fostering inclusivity, and leading the charge towards a more sustainable and circular future.The path forward will not be easy, but I'm confident that by harnessing the power of emerging technologies and shifting our collective mindset, we can reshape the industry to have a profound positive impact on our planet and communities.
