Oakland Leaf was founded in 2001 by a collective of East Oakland educators intent on empowering youth directly affected by violence and poverty by offering them an outlet to examine and express their fears, hopes, and dreams.Today we serve 800 East Oakland students annually in afterschool programs at six high-need elementary and middle schools, two paid internship programs for high school students, and a free summer camp.Oakland Leaf’s mission is to cultivate community transformation through creative education for youth and families. Our programs emphasize social and emotional learning, critical thinking, creative expression, urban ecology, college and career preparation, and social justice. We envision a future where all young people in Oakland have the knowledge, skills, confidence, and drive to co-create a more loving, just, and vibrant city.
