Our HistoryThe National Football Foundation of St. Louis / Tom Lombardo Chapter was founded in 1992 with the mission to promote the great sport of amateur football and the valuable lessons learned both on and off the field. Our chapter proudly awards scholarships to exceptional Scholar Athletes who demonstrate remarkable achievements both on the field and in the classroom, while also displaying a profound commitment to community service. In 1997, the St. Louis chapter was named in memory of Tom Lombardo; a true sports, military and American hero who embodied the values and character of the program. As captain of the 1944 Army Football team, he was known for his drive and determination, as well as his understanding of all aspects of the game, including strategy and individual player capabilities. After Lombardo was mortally wounded in the Korean War, General Douglas MacArthur honored him by saying, “It is highly appropriate that this gridiron, carved out of ground hallowed by American bloodshed that men might be free, be dedicated to honor the memory of Lt. Thomas A. Lombardo, for he brought to the battlefield the fighting spirit and leadership acquired on the football field.”Scholarship ProgramOur chapter has awarded over $750,000 in scholarships to St. Louis’s top scholar athletes and to local football programs in need. The Paul Savage and John Kadlec Annual Golf Tournament is one of our fundraising events, named in the memory of two of our most supportive and influential volunteers. Their contribution and time devoted to the chapter was immeasurable. All donations go directly to our deserving award winners and to area school football programs in need. The entire program is supported by volunteers who share their skills and time to make it successful. Past scholarship recipients still give back to the program with their time and commitment to the upcoming generations by inspiring others to pursue their passions and make a positive impact in their communities. Please consider contributing to the program by joining us at the golf tournament, sponsoring a hole, or donating to help support our future leaders. Any amount is appreciated in reaching our goal of promoting great young men with bright futures.
