Established in 1990, by artists for artists, Backwater Artists Group is committed to providing affordable, high-quality and well-managed studios for visual artists to ensure support at key stages of their careers. Artists are essential to society, and we place them at the heart of everything that we do. Through the provision of facilities and a programme of activities, we are committed to ensuring that artists can continue being artists and develop the skills they need to develop and sustain their studio practice. Backwater identifies and proritises specific forms of support needed by artists at all stages of their creative cycle, to allow them to sustain productive and economic viable careers. Backwater studios also ensure a stable and supportive working environment which has created a thriving community of working artists. We believe in protecting the future of artists workspace in Cork City for local, national and international artists. Through an ongoing outreach programme including exhibitions, talks and workshops, Backwater believes in the importance of widening the range of people that become involved in the arts. By establishing and sustaining a creative platform for visual artists to operate in, Backwater both supports and challenges artists to develop new and experimental artworks with the potential to create new dialogues within the arts scene in Cork City and the capacity to resonate into the future at both a national and international level. Through our Studio 12 exhibition/project space, we support studio and non-studio artists and aim to increase collaboration and engagement with the wider artistic community and the general public through exhibitions and outreach events.Located in an old 3 story warehouse and former grainstore on Wandesford Quay in the heart of Cork City Centre, Backwater Artists Group provides a stable and supportive environment for artists, for the production of visual art and for the establishment of a professional art practice. Backwater currently supports 45 artists working in many different disciplines including painting, sculpture, printmaking, ceramics, metalwork, photography, mixed-media installation and new media through studio and/or darkroom provision. Our studio facility consists of 28 studios in total comprising of 6 sculpture bays and 22 painting/mixed media studios, a darkroom, a digital suite/meeting room, a woodwork area and an exhibition/project space, Studio 12. Membership of the group provides artists with access to a creative community, and an invaluable platform from which to share skills and ideas and make contacts. It also enables studio artists to draw on our wealth of experience and expertise. Our city centre location ensures easy access to the cultural landscape of the city for artists.
