About Selby Ave JazzFestThe Selby Ave JazzFest grew from a desire to rekindle community spirit and togetherness in St. Paul's historic Selby and Rondo neighborhoods. Founded in 2002 by Mychael Wright, then owner of Golden Thyme Coffee Cafe, the festival began as a response to a somber post-9/11 atmosphere. Wright envisioned a "good old-fashioned block party" to bring people together through the power of music and celebration. What started as a modest gathering of 600 attendees on Milton Avenue quickly blossomed into one of St. Paul's most anticipated signature events, drawing crowds of up to 12,000. After more than two decades of dedicated leadership, Mychael and Stephanie Wright retired from their JazzFest duties in 2024, entrusting its future to Walker|West, a renowned music school. This transition aligns perfectly with Walker|West's strategic vision to expand its community engagement through performances, emphasizing that healing and benefit from music come from both learning and listening. The Selby Ave JazzFest continues its legacy as a vibrant celebration of jazz, community, and healing.
