Sunalta is located in Calgary’s southwest, just west of downtown. Its name is likely a derivation of “Sunny Alberta.” Sunalta was developed in two phases, first in 1909 and then in 1911. The area was established as a residential community in 1912. In the 1950s, Sunalta was rezoned and redeveloped to contain a number of apartment style walkups. There is a separate schools in the area.Since 1954 the Sunalta Community Association (SCA) has been building a stronger, more connected community by offering diverse and responsive programs and services. It operates a 100-year-old community hall and revenue generated through rentals is invested back into the community. Sunalta is a Community Hub and is working to:Create welcoming and inclusive spacesIncrease access to supports and servicesEngage residents in the design and activationCreate platforms to spark community economic developmentThe SCA is busy fundraising for a new Hub facility to fund and deliver programming for Calgarians.
