Gayela Bynum, was the catalyst in forming “We Will Survive Cancer,” (WWSC) after becoming aware that families of cancer patients need support while they are caring for their family member. Michelle Bynum, Gayela’s daughter-in-law (as well as Michelle's family and friends), was the inspiration of WWSC. Michelle was diagnosed with advanced Stage III breast cancer, in 2005. During her treatment she learned that many patients and their families did not have the same level of support and and care she received from her family and friends. She discovered that families often felt helpless and needed support as they were trying to maintain their families. Gayela and many caring friends in Washington, took up Michelle’s charge and formed “We Will Survive Cancer,” a 501(c)3 organization. In addition to Chairing WWSC, Gayela is employed with the Department of Housing and Urban Development as a federal government employee.
