Smith Center for Healing and the Arts is a nonprofit 501 (c) (3) whose mission is to develop and promote healing practices that explore physical, emotional, and mental wellness and lead to life-affirming changes. Located in the U Street corridor of Washington DC, Smith Center saw significantly increased demand and notable growth last year, serving over 31,000 unique individuals through more than 40,000 visits.Founded in 1996, Smith Center's work is based on a single, profound idea—that everyone harbors the innate ability to heal, even in the face of life’s most serious challenges. We offer programs for the community and specialize in serving people with cancer and other illnesses, their caregivers, and health care providers and utilizing the arts in healing.Smith Center offers programs in three primary areas:Health and Wellness: General classes that are open to everyone.Cancer Programs: Cancer-specific programs, retreats, support groups, young adult offerings, and individual navigation; andArt and Healing: A variety of programs are offered through our Joan Hisaoka Healing Arts Galleries, creativity classes, and Artists-in-Residence programs.All programs are free or low-cost to ensure the highest levels of accessibility.
