About This Event

The Netherlands grapples with a persistent housing shortage that has been exacerbated by a growing influx of students every year. A concerning trend that is gaining traction is the increasing amount of Dutch students opting to remain in their family homes due to the financial and availability challenges associated with securing student accommodation.

In response to the housing pressures, The Netherlands has implemented measures to curb internationalisation efforts. Recent developments underscore the urgency of addressing housing needs, presenting investors with opportunities. Universities heavily reliant on international students are particularly vulnerable to these effects of the housing crisis, making strategic investment in this sector crucial.

Key challenges explored:

  • Political landscape and sentiments toward internationalisation: The recent political landscape in The Netherlands has placed uncertainty towards internationals and many universities have been asked to halt their active recruitment of foreign students. We will explore how this challenge will affect the market as a whole.

  • Zoning and housing regulations: Stringent zoning laws and regulations often dictate land use, and building requirements make it sometimes complex to find suitable locations for student accommodation. This requires developers to navigate a regulatory landscape that can influence the feasibility and scope of such developments.

Key opportunities explored:

  • Opportunities for partnerships: Many Dutch universities and cities have disapproved of the Dutch government’s stance on international students and are still heavily dependent on international students. This creates opportunities for the private and public sector to collaborate on the issue to facilitate the needed accommodation.

  • Urgent demand for housing: The pressing demand for housing and the gap in supply in the Netherlands presents a unique opportunity for real estate developers and investors. With a scarcity of available housing, there is a chance to address this urgent need by strategically planning student housing projects.

Who are we?

The Class Foundation is a non-profit organisation founded in 2011 with the aim of helping the student living sector to attract and retain the brightest young minds. In promoting this mission, we hope to pave the way to social and economic success for university cities across Europe.

Together with our industry-leading community, we set out to rethink the places where students live, work, and learn. We are focussed on uniting both public and private stakeholders, such as HE institutes, PBSA providers, city and council leaders, and external suppliers to make student accommodation more affordable, accessible, and available in Europe.
