The Dublin Shakespeare Society or, 'The Shakes', was founded in 1907 and is the oldest non-professional theatre company in Ireland. The Shakes have performed virtually all of the Bard's plays over the years and many of the country's greats of Irish theatre 'trod the boards' with the Shakes including Milo O'Shea, T.P. McKenna, George Green, Donal McGann, Jim Norton, Betty Ann Norton, Maire O'Neil, Mike Murphy, Patrick Drury, Brenda Fricker, Gabriel Byrne and many others. The Dublin Shakespeare Society also performs plays from every and any decade and genre. We host readings, workshops, poetry and music nights as well as in situ performances around the country and sometimes in old dilapidated buildings (if the show suits!). We are inclusive and always looking to expand our membership.
