The heritage collections of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow span over 6 centuries and include thousands of medical and surgical instruments, rare books, archives, and artworks. They are an excellent resource for exploring the history of medicine and the history of the city of Glasgow. We hold a variety of public events and exhibitions throughout the year to allow everyone access to these collections. The Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow was founded in 1599 with the grant of a charter from King James VI of Scotland. The charter established a body to examine all professing the art of surgery in Glasgow and South West Scotland. Uniquely for the time, the charter also allowed physicians to be members. We remain the only multidisciplinary Royal College in the UK and support our members by setting the highest possible standards of health care through education, training, professional development, and assessment.
