The Performers Academy (TPA) is dedicated to sharing the power of the performing arts with the entire community. We are committed to helping individuals find their passion for the performing arts – especially those who may not otherwise be exposed to its power.We are a hub for the cultivation of instructors and artists within seven arts & cultural disciplines. TPA seeks to improve the artistic level of performance in our city by providing a synergistic environment where performers and instructors flourish. We recognize the benefit of the arts and its ability to change lives within the community, particularly at risk teens. We cultivate the rich talents of artists from all geographic, ethnic, and economic backgrounds. It is our belief that the performing arts provide a safe and healthy outlet for self-expression and should be available to everyone as a means to increase the quality of life for individuals and neighborhoods that have little to no accessibility outside of the programs we offer. At a time when teen suicide and violence are simultaneously on the rise as public funding for education and the arts are being diminished, there is no better time for skilled arts programming for at hope youth.Squad Goals Teen Studio offers diverse artistic programming that has proven to interrupt cycles of trauma through performance arts. The programs are in our 10,000 square foot facility Monday - Friday from 2:30pm - 6:00pm meeting the unique needs of at-hope teens between the ages of 14 and 19 who are often disengaged from and missing out on meaningful relationships within their community at large. We offer seven artistic disciplines. The curriculum is literacy infused, project - based, disguised therapy. All of our instructors are working professionals in their specified fields of expertise. The disciplines offered include: Lyricism, Theater, Recording Arts, Singing & Songwriting, Visual Arts, Dance, as well as Piano and Guitar.Just Like Me Cultural Arts and Education Experience was developed by TPA in 2012 and has been recognized as an Exemplary Program by the Center for the Study of Social Policy under their Youth Thrive initiative. This Camp also received recognition from Mental Health of America as a featured program. Just Like Me has transformed the lives of both foster children and our artistic instructors every summer for the past 8 years. 100% of our Just Like Me Cultural Arts Experience attendees are in foster care and categorized as “at risk youth.”The Performers Project is our year-round outbound program that provides project-based behavioral intervention and academic enrichment through social interaction and creative engagement. We offer disguised learning in 90-minute bi-weekly sessions with a focus on self-discovery for tweens and teens in a safe and supportive artistic environment. The Performers Project has programmed in multiple sites throughout Greater Jacksonville inclusive of River Oak Florida Recovery School, Boys and Girls Clubs, Dupont Middle School, Highlands Middle School, Ribault Middle School, and a DJJ residency that consisted of 15 workshops over the course of 8 weeks at the Duval Regional Detention Center for Juveniles.Truth & Proof Youth Open Mic is a monthly youth-lead social event that includes planned and spontaneous performances from the community youth. Truth & Proof Youth Open Mic is an opportunity for the youth to share their talents with their peers. In addition to being a platform for showcasing their talents, it is also a crime prevention and safe neighborhoods initiative for youth between the ages of 13-19. By opening up to the community and encouraging participation from teens across all socioeconomic backgrounds, Truth and Proof serves as an artistic platform of self-discovery and community engagement. Each month we have a special guest join us to encourage and inspire the teens. Designed to polish and improve communication skills as well as entrepreneurial acumen within its youth participants, our guests spend quality time with the aspiring artists, sharing stories of their pursuit of a profession in the arts. Hundreds of teens have performed and our teen hosts have the opportunity to learn the business of promoting, curating, and facilitating professional artistic events.Product Of My Environment (Project P.O.M.E) is founded on a student-centered critical and public pedagogy teaching component which develops an individual and collective ability to critically read, write, and think about the world they inhabit. The curriculum utilized focuses on the developmental understanding of social capital and is rooted in intentional grassroots community organizing that brings together all neighborhoods within a city. TPA’s belief in actively engaging young cultural citizens from all highways and byways of our city results in a more integrated and understanding society. Young people learn from individuals they would not have otherwise met and as a result of cultural grounding, they develop mutual respect and tolerance for difference. This is all done through personal connections made through collaborative composition and exposure of autobiographical poetry. We focus on student development, program design, and short and long-term partnerships in the areas of artistry, teaching, and activism.
