The Institute for Jewish Studies Barcelona, was founded in 2023 by a group of cultural activists with the logistic support of: Paideia - Institute for Jewish Studies in Sweden (Mifgash Program, Project Incubator 2022 and 2023) and Mozaika - Plataforma cultural judía in Barcelona. The Institute for Jewish Studies Barcelona is committed to nurturing the renewal of Jewish culture in Catalonia/Spain/Europe as a cultural minority within European societies. To promote interdisciplinary Jewish studies of the highest academic standards within the local academia and the public sphere, and to actively supports cross-cultural dialogue and a pan-European paradigm. The Institute for Jewish Studies Barcelona offers non-denominational programs for the study of Jewish thought and culture, from ancient times to the present. The curriculum is conducted using traditional Jewish study-methodologies and through an interpretive encounter with canonical and masterpiece texts of the “Jewish book shelve”: Bible, Talmud, Philosophy, Theology, Kabbalah, Hasidut, Modern and Contemporary thought. The Institute for Jewish Studies Barcelona specializes in the study and research of the Sephardic branch of Jewish civilization, its legacies, challenges, and futures. The Sephardic studies extends from the abundant heritage of the medieval Iberian Peninsula, through the global distribution of the Sephardic diaspora (spanning regions such as the Mediterranean, the Near East, the Balkans, and the Americas), to present-day vocations and dilemmas. Sephardic thought and tradition are studied as a valuable source, offering unique insights into the questions and challenges of our contemporary era.
