The City Repair Project works with Portlanders to co-create spaces that encourage people to gather, form connections, and thrive. We meet our communities where they are at in their journey towards urban transformation, from collaborative design sessions where residents create a collective vision for their neighborhood to providing guidance, tools, and hands-on support to implement that vision. Our projects are meant to bring joy, reflect community culture and history, improve community engagement, and develop climate resilience. Like us, our urban redesign projects are varied: vibrant street paintings, artistic benches, informational kiosks, food forests, stormwater management, and natural play areas. Key programs like our mobile tea-station, the annual Village Building Convergence festival, and skill-building workshops help bring these community dreams to life, strengthening Portland's social fabric block by block. Our work is deeply collaborative and community-driven. Most projects begin when communities identify a local need or opportunity. We facilitate meetings where community members collectively dream, brainstorm, and design their project. City Repair provides essential support: navigating city processes, technical design assistance, project management, and volunteer coordination. We champion hands-on participation, teaching skills like natural building and collaborative painting during community work parties. We prioritize reclaimed or natural materials. We partner closely with neighborhood associations, schools, and diverse community groups to ensure projects are culturally relevant and meet genuine local needs.
