I'm Christine Discoe, and as a life-long teacher--for over 25 years I've been teaching in Universities, community colleges, and programs throughout the United States, teaching culture and language to students from around the world. Working with other cultures led to my exploration of arts and culture, including painting, stitching, garment construction, shibori, sashiko, and other fiber arts from around the world.Later, supporting retreats through outdoor adventures became a passion; I worked as a camp director and chef, planning, designing and executing gourmet meals in the backcountry wilderness of Colorado and Wyoming. This experience gave me a deep love for bringing community together, eating well, and the magic of a shared, creative experience. My experience working with adult learners has lead to a bedrock belief: we all arecreatureswho need tocreate(thus the shared etymology of those words!) Everyone has a drive to make something. We know this when we are children, but we abandon this truth as we age. It's our right and our destiny to make something that has never existed before, whether it's paint, stitch, craft, bake or choreograph. Rather than talent, this process requires only that we practice regularly, take ourselves lightly, and plunge in. Won't you plunge in with me?
