Mission & PhilosophyTo teach and perpetuate the cultures, traditions and values of the People of Hawai’i through dances, languages, arts, music, history and customs.HistoryHālau O ‘Aulani was founded in 1996 for the sole purpose of creating a learning environment for students interested in the preservation of the multi-faceted cultures of Hawai’i with primary emphasis on the Hawaiian culture. Our intention is to develop the school as a perpetual entity with an educational vision through the next century for those students whose parents and grandparents have left or will leave the State of Hawai’i and its traditions to settle on the mainland, who have the strong desire to retain close ties to their homeland and to perpetuate the spirit and traditions of Hawai’i, and who need the kind of support the Hālau intends to give as well as all others who embrace the Hawaiian culture. The school funds its operations primarily from student tuition, contributions and grants. The school also derives some support from admissions charged for student recitals at school events but does not charge fees for student performances at community-sponsored events. To support its educational activities and on-going community outreach, however, the school does solicit contributions.Sharing AlohaHālau O ‘Aulani is recognized by the Internal Revenue Service as a tax-exempt, educational organization under sections 170 and 501(c)(3) of the tax code.We are an Arlington Supported Arts Organization. Our programs are supported in part by the Arlington Cultural Affairs Division of Arlington Economic Development and the Arlington Commission for the Arts.We have shared our “aloha” with the Hawai’i Visitors & Convention Bureau, Maui Visitors Bureau, the Office of Hawaiian Affairs, Washington Post, United Airlines, Smithsonian Institution, Members of the Hawai’i Congressional Delegation, Hawai’i State Society of Washington, D.C., Georgetown and George Washington Universities, USO (United Service Organizations), Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the D.C.
