Western Crop Innovations (WCI) is a not-for-profit corporation founded in 2024, built on the 50-year legacy of the Field Crop Development Centre.WCI is home to breeding programs that develop new varieties of barley and triticale for the western Prairies, supported by research teams specializing in quality, pathology, biotechnology, and agronomy. Based at a 400-acre research site in Lacombe, Alberta, we grow and manage approximately 40,000 research plots annually across the Central Alberta region.Our team of researchers is dedicated to developing high-yielding varieties with improved disease resistance and superior end-use quality. Through our work, we aim to enhance environmental sustainability, improve agronomic outcomes for producers, address industry challenges, and meet evolving market demands.
