Hummustown is a nonprofit organization founded to provide a living income for Syrian refugees seeking asylum in Italy. The project began in 2018 thanks to the ambitious vision of Shaza Saker, born in Damascus to Syrian parents and a resident of Rome for over 40 years. Through the employment of refugees, HummusTown seeks to promote intercultural exchange through food. Among the many Syrian specialties, hummus, a popular Middle Eastern dip made with chickpeas, tahini, and other ingredients, is produced and sold. As the number of Syrian refugees has decreased over the years, HummusTown has adapted its mission statement to support other vulnerable communities, including refugees from countries other than Syria, victims of domestic abuse and violence from all backgrounds, and economically marginalized Italians who have borne the brunt of the COVID-19 pandemic.
