Black Male Initiative (BMI) is a non-profit organization, Black Male Initiative Georgia is a 501(c)(3) and Black Male Initiative Fund is a 501(c)(4), that seeks to create effective outcomes for our communities by empowering Black Men economically and civically through the use of direct action, advocacy, and grassroots organizing. We are recapturing and reshifting the narrative about Black Men. Our organization represents a collective of community leaders, elected officials, fathers, and diverse ideologies of what it means to be a Black Men in our homes, communities and abroad. We stand in support of the exceptional work of Black Women which creates a vanguard of collaboration and mutual respect. By highlighting the outstanding work of Black Men, BMI advances effective reforms and advocates for our community in our five pillars of work:Civic EngagementOne of the most valuable resources Black Men have at their disposal is civic engagement. Whether at the ballot box or in the streets, our ability to organize information with one another is a critical component to our strategy to build power. It is only by strategizing, organizing and mobilizing our resources through collective action that we will be able to win and protect substantive victories for our people. Our civic engagement pillar is dedicated to developing a powerful cadre of Black Men committed to serve as strategists and political operatives equipped with the skills necessary to advance our organizational agenda in order to secure the robust and lasting advancement that our communities deserve to create the just society we are fighting for!Criminal/Restorative Justice ReformThe Criminal Justice pillar is important because we discovered that those who have been justice impacted do not have the equal opportunity to find a job or get housing. They feel as though they have no hope. We are dedicated to getting out into the community to do recorded restriction fairs, pre-trial diversion, accountability court, and job fairs to help those who have charges that are eligible to be restricted. By doing this we are able to get more Black and Brown people back into their home with their families and into the workforce. Our hope is that these same citizens are able to go back into the community and be leaders.EducationThe Education Pillar is dedicated to helping black men focus on educational opportunities that can enrich their lives personally and professionally. Education is one of the most important keys to self-actualization. The systemic, historical obstructions to education for black men has made the path to that self-actualization a difficult one. This lack of education contributes to the downward spiral of limited economic opportunities, subjugation under the law, and a plethora of other problems that prevent Black Men from achieving success in life.Black Mental Health And WellnessThe Black Mental Health And Wellnesspillar is dedicated to helping black men take out time to focus on their mental and physical health. We encourage black men to have a space to sit down and discuss issues and to take physical health seriously. When it comes to black men and health this topic is not often discussed. In the black community women are more likely to go to therapy or sit and talk with friends. Men of color however will not just openly discuss if they are stressed out, hurt or not feeling well. This stems from historically always having to be vigilant and tough. This causes a health crisis in America with diabetes & heart disease that is negatively impacting black women & men. As well as the depression rates in the black community rising everyday.Economic EmpowermentThe historic tragedy of slavery and the dehumanization of Black People has created an overwhelming system of economic inequality that oppresses tens of millions of black households today. The economic reality of Black people cannot be repaired without a deep and intentional long term investment of resources into our communities. Our Economic Empowerment Pillar is committed to fighting to see that such an investment becomes a reality. We also recognize the need to develop sustainable economic development within our own communities. We are focused on educating Black Men to use every economic tool at their disposal to aid in the full and proper care and liberation of our people.
