The Spire Series at First & Franklin is committed to building community through the presentation of extraordinary performance artists in one of Baltimore's most beautiful sacred spaces. The series features local, national, and international talent and includes both free and ticketed concerts. In addition to presenting concerts, The Spire Series fosters educational opportunities in our community, including at the Baltimore School for the Arts and the Peabody Institute of The Johns Hopkins University. Most of our concerts are free and open to the public, and we are able to maintain this access for our community through the generous support of donors. For more information about becoming a donor or for the full Spire Series season, please visit www.firstfranklin.org/spireseries.ABOUT FIRST & FRANKLIN PRESBYTERIAN CHURCHFounded in 1761, we are the oldest Presbyterian congregation in the City of Baltimore, yet we believe that our heritage does not hinder our progress. We welcome all people to worship with us, regardless of race, ethnicity, country of origin, gender, or sexual orientation. Located in the heart of the Mt. Vernon neighborhood, we seek to actively demonstrate Christ’s love to our neighbors and the city of Baltimore through our commitment to service and engagement. Our founding Minister, The Rev. Dr. Patrick Allison (1740 – 1802) was a Chaplain to the Continental Congress and was a personal friend of George Washington. After conducting worship in private homes clustered around the Inner Harbor, the congregation moved to a log church in 1763, to a brick church in 1765, and later to an enormous two steeple church in 1790, all located in what is now downtown Baltimore. When the center city became increasingly commercial, the congregation moved uptown in 1859 to our present location at Park Avenue and Madison Street. The magnificent Gothic edifice in which we worship was designed by the American architect Norris G. Starkweather. In 1875, the 273 foot tall steeple was added, which remains the tallest steeple in the City of Baltimore. An integral part of the Baltimore skyline, First and Franklin Presbyterian Church is an exquisite example of the Flamboyant Gothic Revival style. Erected between 1854 and 1859, our building is on both the Maryland and National Registries of Historic Buildings and boasts the tallest steeple in the City of Baltimore at 273 feet, which was completed in 1879. Constructed using structural iron and rose colored New Brunswick freestone, the exterior of the building is meant to evoke the Gothic ideals of holy flames reaching to the heavens. The interior sanctuary of our building is equally as impressive. The triple vaulted ceilings feature massive plaster pendants and intricate vault ribbing that draws your eye upwards to the heavens. Considered one of the finest examples of Victorian plaster interiors in the United States, our sanctuary is complemented by enormous stained glass windows, which were dedicated between 1875 and 1946. Three of West windows were executed by the famed Tiffany and Co. of New York City and add an ethereal quality to the light in the sanctuary.Find out more about First & Franklin at our website: www.firstfranklin.org
