East Contra Costa Historical Museum is dedicated to 'Bringing Local History to Life!'. Visitors explore history of local area in the pioneer home of the Byer-Nail Family, Homer's Shed, and the Eden Plain One-Room Schoolhouse, an open Pole Barn as well as a caboose on the grounds. Adults enjoy the nostalgia of days of yesteryear and kids engage in activities that bring history to life ~ sitting on the fire engine, pumping water from a well, or ringing the school bell.Annual family-oriented events include Christmas on the Farm with old-fashioned crafts and games and Opening Day where they can pet 4-H animals or enjoy an old-fashioned pancake breakfast. The museum works with local school districts to host all third grade students for a full day field trip where they learn about their local history and then put it into action in the afternoon as they attend a lesson in the one-room schoolhouse, play games such as sack races, racing hoops, stilts, and do their chores of pumping water, washing clothes, churning butter, and cranking ice cream.East Contra Costa Historical Society is dedicated to preserving and sharing the history of Bethel Island, Brentwood, Byron, Discovery Bay, Knightsen, and Oakley. A well-organized Resource Center is home to thousands of photographs, family history files, and old newspapers from the area. Community members are welcome to research local history.Local organizations are encouraged to arrange for a tour of the museum or to enjoy a brief overview, spend some time exploring well-labeled exhibits, and then enjoy a lunch under the Pole Barn.The museum is open Saturdays and third Sunday each month April through October, 10:00am - 2:00pm.
