This innovation brought a new wave to New York nightlife. Thus, Jean Claude the Funky Pirate established himself as one of the top promoters in New York, working in all of the most prestigious clubs in the city, including the Palladium, Club USA, The Tunnel, Life, Spy Bar, Lotus, Spa, Quo, Home, Guest House and Pink Elephant, among others. Jean Claude the Funky Pirate also inspired early promoters in Montreal, particularly during the Sona and Disalvio era.In 2001, Jean Claude and his brother, Etienne, opened Le Tapis Rouge lounge, which became the European reference in New York City. Etienne who was one of the top DJs in NYC gave Jean Claude the opportunity to become a resident DJ on Wednesdays. This started Jean Claude’s DJ adventure which alongside his passion for music production, he is still pursuing today.Jean Claude is recognized by his pirate hat as an NYC icon. He is one of, if not the most well-known promoters in New York due to his distinctive look. He played a crucial role in the resurgence of DJ Grandmaster Flash and in the official releases of albums by Lauryn Hill, DMX, Fat Joe, and Aaliyah. His parties were characterized by a mix of all kinds of people, including models and celebrities like P. Diddy, Jay-Z, Prince, Madonna, Beverly Peel, Mike Tyson, and Tyson Beckford, just to name a few.
