Rec Room Recording was born from a recurring theme presented by young songwriters who have literally submitted hundreds of songs over the past twenty years to the Shirley Martin Scholarship for Young Songwriters. That theme was their shared desire to record their songs professionally, to learn how to record on their own equipment and the common thread of a willingness to learn from others.​In 2019, the Songwriters Association Of Mid-North Indiana “SAMI” who sponsors the Shirley Martin Scholarship took the opportunity to apply for and receive a grant provided by North Central Health Services. The grant fulfilled the desire to build a world-class studio that would be accessible, affordable to the community and be a focal point for the recording arts.​
