Silver Spring (MD) Chapter of The Links, Inc.

The Links, Incorporated founded in 1946, is an international non-profit corporation and one of the oldest and largest volunteer service organizations of women, who are committed to enriching, sustaining and ensuring the culture and economic survival of African Americans and other persons of African ancestry. Sarah Scott and Margaret Hawkins co-founded and organized the Links with a three-fold aim toward civic, education, and cultural involvement. Based on these purposes, The Links would implement programs which its founders hoped would foster cultural appreciation through the arts, through development of richer inter group relations, and through the participation of women in social and civic responsibilities. The first National Assembly was held in Philadelphia in 1949. Delegates were present from Atlantic City, Baltimore, Central New Jersey, Petersburg, Philadelphia, Pittsburgh, Raleigh, Saint Louis, Wilmington, Delaware, and Wilson Rocky Mount-Tarboro Chapters. The Links organization was incorporated in 1951.The Silver Spring, Maryland Chapter was chartered in November, 1972 as the 143rd chapter of The Links, Incorporated. We provide service and support to the Montgomery County community and deliver transformational programming supported by the national organization. Since its chartering, our chapter has grown from the initial “fifteen” to over fifty civic minded, caring women, committed to enriching the lives of others, and continue to exert their mark of dedicated service throughout Montgomery County.
