Kylee Shurter is the Director of Prevention and Intervention Counseling with Albuquerque Public Schools. Her 25 years of combined clinical and school counseling experience in various settings, including community mental health agencies, her own private practice specializing in children and teens and working in both in public and charter schools at all levels, make her a perfect fit for the programs that she supports at APS. Currently these programs include:Crossroads Team: Masters Level Licensed School Counselors specially trained in substance use/misuse/dependency and placed at each of APS’ 13 comprehensive high schools and recently an additional 4 positions were added to develop a Crossroads program focusing on prevention education at the middle school level.Community Mental Health Providers (CMHP): local mental health therapists are contracted to provide individual and family therapy to students on APS campuses during the school day who might not otherwise have access to servicesSchool Based Behavioral Health Therapists: expanding a program where clinicians are hired to be full time APS employees in the school setting.Kylee has always had a heart for helping children and reaching them where they are. Although she often misses the 1:1 connections made as a school counselor and psychotherapist, she feels especially blessed in her role as a Counseling Director at APS where she can continue to help and reach children, just on a larger scale by guiding and supporting others who share the same heart.
