Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center, Inc.(SQFC)Segunda Quimbamba Folkloric Center (SQFC) Inc. is a 501c (3) not-for-profit Puerto Rican Cultural Arts organization established in 1997 in Jersey City, whose mission remains to sustain a space to celebrate and preserve this musically rich heritage. This is accomplished through documentation, education and live performance. A focus on the art form of drum and dance: authentic sounds of Afro-Puerto Rican Bomba and Plena rhythms.The organization is rooted in the inspiration of local residents through the years, and the Puerto Rican community asking us to do more. They expressed to us their desire to strengthen and build community through the arts and culture in support of one another. Love and longing inspire us to hold on to, preserve cultural customs and traditions this is where we connect. Through the music and expressive dance movement.Exchanging cultural values like many countries around the world is a way of life for the Puerto Rican community here or there. We believe passionately that music and dance heal us and unite us.The organization is a nationally recognized voice in the diaspora.Juan Cartagena, Executive Director, Musical Director and a NJSCA recognized Drum Master. Composer. Writer and publisher of the nationally distributed publication, Guiro y Maraca. In July 2023 he received the Heritage Fellowship award from the NJSCA, the highest award in folk and cultural arts in New Jersey.Nanette Hernandez is Director of Development & Education Initiatives, a Principal Ensemble Dancer and Dance Master in Bomba and Plena traditions. In July 2023 she received the Heritage Fellowship award from the NJSCA, the highest award in folk and cultural arts in New Jersey.Juan and Nanette are performers and Teaching Artists who create authentic experiences through educational residencies. They have taught thousands of students engaging them in a love for music, people and community and performed to thousands in hundreds of venues both private and public.The Center collaborates with Young Audiences of New Jersey & Eastern Pennsylvania, Dance New Jersey, Northern NJ Center for the Folk Arts, Perkins Center for the Arts, among many organizations and universities to create diverse and inclusive educational programming and performances.Segunda QuimbambaIs led by the percussionist, and band leader Juan Cartagena, Executive Director of the of SQFC and he is the Musical Director and a NJSCA recognized Drum Master.Segunda Quimbamba originally was founded as the Pleneros de la Segunda almost 30 years ago in preservation of a childhood tradition we missed called Parrandas. That lead to and spurred a lifetime of learning, practice and joy in preserving and sharing our cultural connections.Segunda Quimbamba is one of the most beloved folkloric ensembles throughout New Jersey, the metro area, and Pennsylvania and recognized as a bearer of preserving and promoting Afro-Puerto Rican music in the diaspora. The group has performed to international audiences as well as the island residents. The ensemble currently has 20 members ages 7 – 77 who perform and present interactive educational demos and workshops for all types of venues, public and private events, schools, universities, parades, festivals and concerts.
