Dundee comes alive with a whale-themed festival of art, science, polar exploration & heritage at the waterfront, V&A & Discovery Point!Join us for talks, workshops, storytelling and the unveiling of part one of the whale memorial.Brought to you by Dundee-based charity South Georgia Heritage Trust.SGHT is about to celebrate 20 years of work on the sub-Antarctic island of South Georgia, where its mission is to protect the island’s environment and preserve its history. SGHT delivers and supports conservation, education and heritage projects, including managing the South Georgia Museum. The charity is probably best known for delivering the world’s largest successful invasive rodent eradication, with South Georgia declared rodent-free in 2018. The rats and mice were accidentally brought ashore by the whalers, and this decade-long project has had a huge impact on the island’s environmental recovery, allowing important seabird populations to flourish again in what is a huge breeding ground for many species.Building on the success of the Habitat Restoration Project, the charity is now starting the next chapter in protecting and preserving South Georgia’s wildlife, environment, and heritage for future generations, working in collaboration with the Government of South Georgia and the South Sandwich Islands, and the Friends of South Georgia Island (FOSGI) in the USA. As well as projects such as the Whale Memorial at Grytviken and the Whalers’ Memory Bank, SGHT’s Whaling Station Initiative includes vital conservation work to stabilise the Stromness Manager’s Villa, a world-renowned site central to the story of Shackleton and the Endurance expedition.SGHT hopes to begin the work to save the Villa this November (2025).
