The Promoting Positive & Healthy Youth Relationships Project (PPHYR) was developed collaboratively by the Centre for Rural and Northern Health Research (CRaNHR) at Lakehead University (Research/Evaluation Lead) and the Thunder Bay District Health Unit (TBDHU) (Implementation Lead).The goal of the PPHYR project is to address the pressing need for effective YDV (and ultimately GBV) prevention in Thunder Bay and District communities. The project aims to provide youth at increased risk of experiencing YDV (i.e., 2SLGBTQI+ youth; Youth with a disability; Black or racialized youth; Youth who have already experienced gender-based or family violence; Youth who belong to immigrant, refugee and newcomer communities) with the knowledge and skills to develop and maintain healthy relationships, to learn from the project’s efforts, and to share lessons learned with youth-serving organizations and the larger YDV and GBV Communities of Practice. The project will do this by adapting, delivering, and evaluating Western University’s “Healthy Relationships Plus Program” Enhanced for Vulnerable Youth (HRPP-E) and/or the 2SLGBTQIA+ version in community-based settings.Rationale for the PPHYRPrevalence of IPV is particularly high in Thunder Bay, reporting 1.5x national, and 2x provincial rates. In November 2023, the city of Thunder Bay declared IPV an epidemic.IPV is a serious public health issue that can have lifelong health, social and economic impacts. Experiencing violence as a youth is associated with poorer education outcomes, mental health challenges, substance use, risky sexual behaviours, and increased risk for IPV. Because dating relationships emerge during adolescence, this is a critical time for the primary prevention of IPV.
