Grant Stiles:Stiles Honey officially opened for business in 1995 as Stiles Apiaries, but really started as an eight year old boy’s love of the outdoors and sharing his father’s hobby. Grant Stiles was just a boy when his father first introduced him to beekeeping, and from his first moment of looking inside his first hive, Grant was hooked on honeybees and beekeeping.​That started as a young boy’s hobby has now grown into one of the most successful apiaries in the New York/New Jersey area, with Stiles Honey currently managing well-over 4,000 honeybee colonies a year.As an entomologist with a passion for bees, Grant became the New Jersey State Apiarist, a position he held for 10 years. During his tenure as state apiarist, Grant learned about the industry of commercial beekeeping and obtained the tools he needed to successfully run Stiles Honey.Beekeeping is a reoccurring theme in Grant’s life, as he paid for much of his college education at Penn State by selling beeswax candles and hand painted beeswax ornaments. He graduated with a degree in entomology, where his emphasis and research was on the honeybee.Tim Schuler:Tim Schuler started keeping bees as a young boy with his dad and his brother in Prospect Park, Pennsylvania, a small suburb of Philadelphia. Tim graduated in 1982 from Delaware Valley College, Doylestown, PA with a BS in Animal Husbandry. He began his career helping to manage a large cattle and hog feed lot in central NJ. In 1986 he began working for the New Jersey Department of Agriculture (NJDA) as an Animal Health Technician in the Division of Animal Health. In 1989 and ‘90 Tim served a short time as a bee inspector for the NJDA, during Jake Matthenius’s 42-year tenure as State Apiarist. In 1991 Tim started a side business managing 300 colonies of honeybees providing pollination services to South Jersey farmers and producing honey in Warren County NJ. In 2007 he took the position of State Apiarist with the NJDA Division of Plant Industry. As part of those responsibilities, he taught beekeeping to beekeepers, non-beekeepers and Rutgers University undergraduates. He inspected colonies throughout the state for diseases and pests, helping beekeepers keep strong healthy colonies of honeybees and promoting New Jersey’s beekeeping industry along the way.n retirement Tim and his wife Patty continue to manage 200 colonies for pollination and honey production, consulting with beekeepers looking to improve their operation, and helping subsistence farmers in Malawi manage honey bees for profit.Tim.Schuler@comcast.net856-498-0558
