Tucked within the grounds of Retford Park—a heritage-listed National Trust property in Bowral—is our working honey farm, a peaceful and purposeful part of this extraordinary estate. Retford Park was once the beloved country home of philanthropist and publisher James Fairfax AC, whose generosity and lifelong commitment to the arts, conservation, and community are deeply embedded in the character of this place. In 2016, Fairfax gifted the property to the people of Australia via the National Trust, ensuring that its legacy would be preserved and enjoyed for generations to come. The honey farm continues the site’s long agricultural tradition, offering visitors a unique glimpse into the natural rhythms of the land through the lens of bees and pollination. Our bees forage on surrounding bushland and gardens, collecting nectar that reflects the region’s rich biodiversity. We see our work here not only as a celebration of nature, but as a meaningful contribution to the ongoing story of stewardship, education, and sustainability that Retford Park embodies.A visit to the honey farm can be part of a full and enriching day at Retford Park. After meeting the bees and tasting honey on our sun-drenched terrace overlooking the rolling hills, you can explore the historic Italianate mansion that James Fairfax once called home. With its elegant interiors, curated art collections, and beautifully restored gardens, the house offers a fascinating glimpse into the life of one of Australia’s most influential cultural figures. Also on the grounds is Ngununggula, the Southern Highlands’ first regional gallery. Housed in a thoughtfully reimagined dairy building, Ngununggula (a Gundungurra word meaning “belonging”) presents a rotating program of contemporary art exhibitions, performances, talks, and community events. The gallery is a vibrant cultural hub and a fitting continuation of James Fairfax’s dedication to the arts.Right next door, Moonacres Café offers a seasonal, paddock-to-plate menu sourced from local producers and the café’s own regenerative farm. Whether you're after a relaxed lunch, fresh baked goods, or a great cup of coffee, it’s a welcoming space to reflect on your visit and enjoy the slower pace of the Southern Highlands.Together, these experiences—nature, art, food, and heritage—make Retford Park a truly special destination. We’re proud to be part of this living legacy, and we invite you to join us in celebrating the bees, the land, and the stories that connect them.
