Chichester City Bandwas founded in 1897 after the City Council sought a “live” band to play at events in the City and its environs. Mr Robert Bottrill, a local coal merchant, both loaned the members £60 for instruments and served as bandmaster for many years.Since then, the Band has continued to provide music for local fetes and shows in West Sussex and beyond. We also present our own popular public concerts in and around our home city and rehearse twice weekly in the Super Shell building at the world famousGoodwood Motor Circuit. The band has contested for over 100 years, performing in many famous venues including London’s Royal Albert Hall. We keenly support the Southern Counties Amateur Band Association (SCABA) and this year were Section 3 runners-up in their Spring Contest, winning a special award for the best horn section. Our triumph at the 2019 Area Contest in Stevenage, playing Gustav Holst’s First Suite in Eb, is especially significant since the composer’s ashes are buried in Chichester Cathedral. Even more appropriate is that the National Finals are held in Cheltenham, the city of Holst’s birth. Wewonder if Holst’s spirit helped usinachieving a creditable 6thplace at this year's eventWe benefit greatly from the expert guidance, preparation and tutelage of our talented MD,Rom Stanko.
