Our group started initially in 2017 making poppy displays to commemorate one hundred years of the ending of WW1. We had such a response from the local community and beyond we ended up with some 65,000 poppies that we sewed onto netting for displays. When we first set up the group we had definite aims,• To commemorate 100 years since the ending of WW1.• To try to increase the footfall into Ripon in order to help hard pressed businesses.• To try to help to bring our community together, and help to prevent isolation. The people who help our group (both men and women) have become such good friends we decided to continue with our group and a weekly knit and natter group was set up to start making knitted displays for the Tour de Yorkshire and UCI World Championships which both came through Ripon. The success of our group grew and we have been awarded various awards for helping to increase tourisum.More recently, our group were delighted to make knitted displays to decorate Ripon in readiness to celebrate The Late Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. Two of our ladies had the honour to attend one of the garden parties at Buckingham Palace recently and had such a wonderful time that on their return they made some miniture knitted Beef Eaters, one of which we forwarded to The Late Queen who wrote a wonderful letter in response expressing her gratitude for the gift and her interest in our project.
