The mission of the Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport is to foster the culture, arts, and history of African Americans; to offer multi-disciplined arts programs for children, youth, and adults; and to act as a clearinghouse for the arts in Northwest Louisiana. To this end, TPA provides actors, dancers, musicians, directors, and playwrights of every hue with a theatrical venue where their talents can reach fruition. The Theatre of the Performing Arts of Shreveport (TPA) has successfully operated in the Shreveport metropolitan area for fifty (50) years, promoting a positive representation of African American culture through theatre, dance, music, visual arts, African American history, and literature. Over the past thirty-one (31) years, TPA has developed and conducted cultural arts programs that address the challenges of low-income neighborhoods, such as gang violence, poor educational performance, and lack of quality cultural arts programming. During this period, we have served thousands of youth and we have worked with a number of public agencies, faith-based organizations, and governmental entities. Our purposes are to reduce the influence of these at-risk conditions by providing these youth with an opportunity to participate in cultural arts programs with highly trained teaching and performing artists of diverse racially and socioeconomic backgrounds; to allow them to explore and discover their innate talents and abilities in the context of music, visual arts, dance and theatre; and to increase their art literacy and their appreciation of discipline and hard work. More recently, TPA has transitioned into a state-of-the-art producer of Arts in Education programming. Its YAZZY series has demonstrated that there is prodiously musically and theatrically talented youth throughout our city, even in at risk communities or at “unacceptable performing schools”. We firmly believe that this demonstration must continue in order to show the types of outcomes that art education can produce in our youth.
