Maji Safi Group

MSG is guided by a philosophy of community-led development that allows for programs to be adapted by and for community members to meet their own unique needs in terms of approach, design, and implementation. This means that stakeholders within each benefiting community are engaged in the ownership of all projects and interventions, from expressing desired needs, planning proper implementation, and taking part in meaningful evaluations. MSG achieves community-led ownership in three significant ways. First, by employing mostly female Community Health Educators (CHEs), benefiting their own communities as liaisons between the community’s needs and MSG’s resources. Second, by partnering with essential and respected government institutions at the regional and district level. These government entities are responsible for long-term ownership and continuation of specified projects and are accountable to the citizens they serve. Lastly, MSG partners with essential host-community institutions, like schools, hospitals, and professional/civic groups. These institutions lend their expertise and credibility and have been formative in the growth and acceptance of MSG within the Rorya District and the Mara Region.MSG desires to expand this philosophy to more communities across the Mara Region to create a more equitable NGO sector. It is common in the NGO sector to rely on community liaisons, such as community health workers and volunteers. Too often, these community liaisons are unpaid and under-resourced volunteers. This model is unequitable and unsustainable. MSG’s community-led model, with emphasis on quality employment, ensures community ownership and long-term sustainability by investing in the human capacity of community members.
