Molokai Kemehameha Celebrations

Molokai Kamehameha CelebrationsLed by Commissioner Lopez of the Kamehameha Commission, the Molokai Kamehameha Celebrations team epitomizes the spirit of community and dedication to cultural heritage. This entirely volunteer group consists of grassroots individuals from Molokai, deeply committed to honoring the legacy of King Kamehameha, the founding father of the Hawaiian Kingdom. The inception of Kamehameha Day traces back to December 22, 1871, when King Kamehameha V proclaimed a national holiday to commemorate his grandfather. Originally intended to celebrate Kamehameha V himself, the holiday was humbly shifted to honor his esteemed ancestor, resulting in the establishment of June 11 as Kamehameha Day, first celebrated in 1872.Molokai, often referred to as the piko (navel) of Hawaii, holds a unique place in this tradition. It is the island where the month-long statewide celebration commences, setting the precedent for the festivities that follow across the archipelago. Now in its third year, Molokai's leadership in the Kamehameha Day Celebrations underscores its pivotal role in preserving and promoting Hawaiian culture and history. The Molokai Kamehameha Celebrations team, under the guidance of Commissioner Lopez, is dedicated to creating an event that not only pays tribute to King Kamehameha but also fosters a deeper connection to the rich cultural tapestry of Hawaii. Their efforts ensure that the legacy of King Kamehameha is celebrated with the respect and reverence it deserves, inspiring both residents and visitors to honor Hawaii's storied past and vibrant heritage.
